The conference, cosponsored by the Electrochemical Society, included:
  • Three plenary presentations which discussed the strategic opportunities for fuel cells within the military and commercial marketplace. The plenary presentations were given by:

    Commanding General, U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, USA

    Bruce Utz,
    National Energy Technology Laboratory, Office of Fossil Energy, U.S. Department of Energy, USA
    And
    Patrick B. Davis,
    Fuel Cell Team Leader, Office of Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Infrastructure Technologies, U.S. Department of Energy, USA

    Frank Preli,
    Vice President Engineering, UTC Fuel Cells, CT, USA

  • Fifteen keynote addresses from leaders in the academic, science, government and industrial sectors highlighting specific advances and potential opportunities.

  • Eighty additional oral presentations and fifty poster presentations from all sectors of industry and academia. Accepted papers will be published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in the newly announced Journal of Fuel Cell Science and Technology.

  • The conference dinner was held at the Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration. At this dinner, Dr. Hans Maru, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of FuelCell Energy, Inc. was awarded the inaugural Francis T. Bacon Achievement Award for his contribution to the advancement of fuel cells and energy systems in a career that spans over 25 years.

  • Four short courses were given to over 50 attendees the Sunday prior to the conference. These courses covered the history of fuel cells, codes and standards, durability concepts and analysis, fuel cell performance and characterization and fuel cell engineering and modeling.

  • Tours were given of UTC Fuel Cells and Mohegan Sun's Mohegan Energy, Environment, Economics Education Center.
